Summer is coming to a close and that means some of my favorite fruit won't be at their best for a long time to come! Melons and berries are some of my go-to snacks and to bid them farewell in true summer fashion, I concocted a fun, refreshing cocktail perfect for that last hoorah BBQ or poolside lounge.  I chose to forego hard alcohol for my mid-day treat but with a couple shots of gin or vodka you can easily turn this family-friendly healthy slushie into an adults only option!  Either way, live out the nostalgia of slushies and snow cones from your local ice cream truck without the artificial flavors and heavy doses of syrupy sugar with this recipe.  So long as you have a blender handy, you can combine your favorite summer fruits into a healthy at-home slushie in minutes


3/4 blueberries

3/4 blackberries

2 tbsp agave nectar

1 tbsp water

Juice of 1/2 lime

3 sprigs mint

2 cups watermelon (peeled, seeded and diced)

3 cups ice

Juice of 1 1/2 limes and 2 blood oranges


In a small-medium saucepan, warm blueberries and blackberries on low-medium heat.  Add agave, water and juice of 1/2 lime.  Stir occasionally until berries soften and start to break apart, approximately 7-10 minutes.  Use a potato masher or back of large spoon to smash your berry mixture whilst on the stove to get as much juice out of the berries as you can.  Remove from heat and strain liquid into a bowl.  Discard remaining berry guts and put berry juice into freezer to cool down.  Also place a couple glasses in freezer to keep them cool for final product!

Squeeze remaining lime and blood orange juice and pour into a blender.

Add ice, watermelon and mint (and booze, if you're using it!) to blender and pulse on high until ingredients are combined and ice is broken down to a drinkable, slush like consistency.  Add more ice if needed!

Spoon chilled berry juice/jam into bottom of chilled glasses and pour watermelon slush on top.  Add a mint leaf and straw and get stirring and sipping before it all melts!
